George Lynn Cross Research Professor | Presidential Research Professor | Charles E. Foster Chair | Professor of Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering

Major research interests include biomechanics of tissues and organs, biomechanics of the ear, implantable hearing devices, finite element modeling of the auditory system, and biomechanical measurement and modeling of blast injury and hearing protection mechanisms.

Yijie Jiang, PhD

Assistant Professor

Dr. Jiang is an assistant professor in the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Jiang earned his doctoral degree in mechanical engineering and applied mechanics from the University of Pennsylvania in 2017, his master’s degree in mechanical engineering and applied mechanics from the University of Pennsylvania in 2013, and his bachelor’s degree in theoretical and applied mechanics from Fudan University in 2011. Dr. Jiang’s major research interests include 3D printing, finite element analysis, sustainable manufacturing, functional and sustainable composites, and interface science.

Shangyuan Jiang, PhD

Research Scientist

Shangyuan Jiang, PhD is a research scientist at OU BME laboratory since 2018. Dr. Jiang earned his doctoral degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 2018 and his bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering from Wuhan University in 2013. Dr. Jiang’s major research interests include biomechanical measurement under blast conditions and the development of therapeutic solutions to blast-induced auditory injuries in the chinchilla animal model.

Alexander G. Bien, MD, FACS

Otolaryngologist | Associate Professor

Dr. Bien is an associate professor in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at OU Health Sciences Center and a board-certified otolaryngologist at OU Health with fellowship training in otology, neurology, and skull base surgery. Dr. Bien earned his medical degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Illinois. He completed his residency training in otolaryngology from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska and completed a fellowship in otology, neurology, and skull base surgery at House Ear Clinic, Los Angeles, California.
Dr. Bien has his focus on clinical and translational research in surgery, including cochlear implants, surgical treatment of vertigo, and chronic ear surgery. Dr. Bien’s major research interests include ear biomechanics, prevention and treatment of blast-induced auditory injuries, and biomechanical measurement under blast conditions.

Qunfeng Cai, MD, PhD

Research Scientist

Dr. Cai received a Master of Science and PhD degree from China Medical University of Shenyang, China and a MD degree from Jinzhou Medical College of Jinzhou, China. He has conducted hearing research as a postdoctoral fellow and research scientist at the Center for Hearing and Deafness, SUNY at Buffalo, NY, as a research associate in the department of Otolaryngology at Wayne State University, and as a research scientist at Hough Ear Institute. He focused on studying the mechanism of noise induced hearing loss and stem cell cochlea transplantation. He also focused on animal studies of cochlear hair cell regeneration and pharmacological approaches to treating hearing loss caused by acute acoustic trauma and ototoxic chemicals. His background in drug delivery, anatomy, surgery, and electrophysiology of the auditory system in animal models. He has authored or co-authored 20 publications in peer reviewed professional journals that deal with various aspects of the structure and function of the auditory system.

Marcus Brown, PhD

Co-Founder of Oto-Biomechanics, LLC

Dr. Brown is the co-founder of Oto-Biomechanics, LLC, and an academic affiliate with OU. He earned his doctoral degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 2021, his master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 2013, and his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2009. Dr. Brown’s research areas include finite elemental simulation, 3D printing, scanning electron microscope imaging, and the development of hearing protection devices using nanomaterials.

John Jackson Bradshaw, MS

Modeling Engineer of Oto-Biomechanics, LLC

John (Jackson) earned his master’s degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 2023. He is currently working as an engineer in Oto-Biomechanics, LLC. He is an academic affiliate with OU. His research areas include finite elemental simulation, cochlear biomechanics, multiscale modeling, and programming on supercomputers.

Hongbing Lu, PhD

Professor and Louis A. Beecherl Jr. Chair | University of Texas at Dallas

Hongbing Lu, PhD, is a professor and Louis A. Beecherl Jr., Chair in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UT-Dallas. Dr. Lu earned his PhD in Aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology in 1997, MS degree in Engineering Mechanics from Tsinghua University in 1988, and BS degree in Solid Mechanics from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1986. Dr. Lu is a long-time coordinator with Dr. Gan and OU BME lab on various research projects in computational modeling, measurement of material properties, and hearing protection devices. He currently serves as a consultant for the DOD awarded research project on multiscale biomechanical modeling and measurement of auditory injury and protection mechanisms.
